Turquoise—ORIGIN: The opaque to semi-translucent and fragile sky-blue
stones were called “Turkish stones” when first exported to Europe by Turkish
traders. The Venetians called the blue stones “turchesa”’ the Germans,
“turkis” and the French, “Pierre Turquoise.”
Physical properties of Turquoise: Microcrystalline encrustations
found as nodules or in veins. The colors range from sky-blue to green
depending upon the combination of Copper and iron.
Symbolic properties of Turquoise: Turquoise has been said to
promote health, healing, and physical and spiritual protection. Native
Americans have used the stone as a spiritual bridge between realms. Turquoise
is frequently worn by shamans and healers. When worn or handled the copper
in turquoise can increase one’s energy. The stone has been associated with
rain-making, good fortune and preservation of friendship.
